Well bred, well mannered quarter black women
(Quadroons) would be taken to these balls, where rich white men would take
them as mistresses. They would be bought houses, clothing, all they needed
and desired. Their children would be taken care of, and sent to good
schools. They were dark enough to be considered exotic and beautiful, but
not dark enough to be humiliating for a white man to have one as a
mistress. Another, more 'refined' version of prostitution, and well
encouraged socially, these balls would be heavily glamour laced as well,
to further entrance the white men into picking the faerie over the
mortal. These women would continue to use their glamour to keep themselves
exotic, so the man in question would never grow tired of his mistress,
would never find her mundane. There would always be something new to
discover at her house.
