Father Joseph Prejean, Priest of Krewe of Rex

7th Generation Tzimisce Ancilla

History

Father Joseph was a priest, but not a good one. Obsessed with innocence, he entered the priesthood, but soon learned that his was not a pure interest. Molesting many who came under his care under the influence of his compulsion, he was eventually caught and sent to prison for his crimes. His stay was not long however, as child molesters are not treated well by the general prison populace. It was in the infirmary, on the brink of death from his lynching, that he was approached by a man who said he could help him understand who he was and why he did the things he did. Taken from the prison and listed as dead, he was told that he was a stray from a family called Prejean, who was never told of his heritage by a mother ashamed of her rape at the hands of the man's half-brother, Esmond.

His savior was Beranger Prejean and the day he took him to meet the rest of the family was the happiest day in Joseph's life. He had finally found a place where he fit in and where his deviance made sense. He easily adopted the twisted religious beliefs of the family and accepted Malena as his saint, choosing to return to New Orleans to serve her rather than remain with his family in Lafayette. This decision prompted his rather unexpected Embrace by Jean-Michel, who told him that he was to watch over affairs and report back on them to the family. Joseph, of course, agreed and became the family's most valuable spy in the city. Able to travel in kindred circles Beranger could not, he was capable of keeping tabs on the Lasombra and Serpents much more effectively than his uncle.

In the years since, he has served faithfully both saint and family, though his devotion to the sect was somewhat lax until the Camarilla attack on Lafayette in 1970 fired in him a great hatred of them. The death of his father and his half-sister still burn within him, calling for revenge, and it has been said that many suspected Camarilla ghouls and agents in the city have gone missing shortly after Joseph learns of them, never to be heard from again. He has also been deemed a bad influence on the others in his pack, who are seen as too depraved to be of any use to the sect. The Lasombra have contemplated means to dispose of him in such a manner as to not spark a war with Lafayette.

Personality

Father Joseph is an intense, fevered man, gripped with uncontrollable desires and forbidden appetites. He seems deeply ashamed of his deviancy and his penitence is the cornerstone of his manipulations, used to evoke pity to draw in his victims. It is all the more powerful for its partial sincerity. He has not learned to accept his urges as much as he has merely come to terms with his damned state. He sees himself as cursed to an eternity of inflicting evil on the world in return for his sins, to test the faith of those not yet damned. Unfortunately, few seem to pass the test.

Relationships

Father Joseph is very close to his uncle, Beranger, and the two are close confidantes. They share their knowledge of the city, trading kindred gossip for the latest in mortal and family affairs. He is somewhat less fond of Sevis, mostly because of the boy's poor attitude and also because of his rather obvious and simple evil.

The rest of the family has his utter dedication, both sides of it even, which sometimes puts him at odds with his Prejean relations who dislike the Brasseaux or don't consider them kin. He is respectful of the kindred of Lafayette and consider them more his masters than his superiors in New Orleans, which is true in a sense. He has little contact with the members of the family in other cities, as he rarely leaves New Orleans and, then, only to travel home.

Of the New Orleans kindred, he is only really fond of the members of his pack. He finds the Serpents to be false in their belief and dislikes the voodoo mixed in with their interpretation of Catharism. The Lasombra he dislikes because of their ignorance of Malena's path and the Brujah still smell too much of the Camarilla for his liking. He has considered, on more than one occasion, taking out his grief on them, only to be disuaded by Father Gossett, Beranger, or his packmates.
