The teeming mass of humanity is by far the most abundant, and important, group in the World of Darkness. Every "supernatural race" is in some way dependant upon it. The vampires requires it for sustenance, the shifters for breeding, mages are restricted by its beliefs, wraiths must nurture their link to it lest Oblivion consume them, and the fae are forced to join with it to avoid destruction.

Furthermore, mortals are not helpless. Not only do they have the force of numbers, but there are many simple men and women who possess extraordinary powers on par with the other denizens of the World of Darkness. Some are hunters, using their faith or simple hedge magic to find and destroy the others, while most are merely talented individuals, blessed with mental or spiritual powers. Especially in New Orleans, where voodoo is a powerful religious force, are mortals not to be assumed to be helpless by those who wish to survive.
