Mages, Familiars, and Custos
New Orleans has always been a city steeped in mystical tradition. Religion and magic were the only binding glue for many of the africans brought here in chains and denied their language, culture, and the right to congregate. Voodoo, more than any other factor in the Caribbean, was responsible for reminding the slaves where they came from. Among them, certain talented individals were seen as being particularly blessed by the Loa. These true mages worked alongside their hedge magician allies to preserve their heritage through alliances with the dead and an understanding of the spiritual nature of the world. As time passed and the world grew, more and different magicians came to this city, from the wild Cultists of Ecstasy coming to bask in the city's abandon to the Chorister nuns bent on saving the depraved city from this same immorality. Even the technological wizards came, to exploit the tourist trade and the gambling and impose its will on the untameable city.
