Shadow

Eric's shadow believes that his intelligence is overrated, that he has no real skill and that his competance is merely posturing. He thinks that he is merely capable, if that, and that the immense potential of his youth was wasted. Bad decisions, lack of motivation, and arrogance have taken what could have been a richly successful life and reduced it to a pathetic struggle for survival. His shadow hates this, hates any weakness at all, hates incompetance and stupidity with a passion that is lacking in his psyche. He is never so driven as he is by this rage. Its attitude is 'Why bother?' when it comes to those he cares about. He will only fuck up the relationship and all he can hope for, now that he's ruined his life, is the selfish little pleasures in life (including pointing out and attacking the weaknesses of others, especially those who hurt or criticize him). His shadow is especially bitter about Autumn, because she's helped him feel good about himself again and believe in himself. She has put him in a position where he will get hurt, badly, if it turns out his optimism is misplaced. Part of it is also his psyche's fixation on her, as an anchor in his new life.

Eric's shadow wants him to give up on Autumn and stop caring. It wants him to drown himself in the pretend realities he creates on paper and online. It hates his brother for representing everything he has failed to be and lashes out at him violently at any opportunity, taking particular joy in pointing out weaknesses, mistakes, and flaws, despising the implied criticism it sees in Matthew's every action. It also resents Dennis' arrogance, which it feels is unearned, and loves to focus on the man's flaws.

Eric always had trouble sleeping when he felt like his life was crashing down on him. This has held over into death with the Nightmares flaw, causing his slumber to be interupted by visions of everything which worries him, blown completely out of proportion. Mirror, mirror is also a holdover from life. His self-image always suffered from the ridicule of his childhood, due to his being overweight and having poor hygeine. Thus, his shadow often uses mirrors against him, showing him that all of the criticisms against him are true, and that he is truly worthless. Lastly, the tainted relic represents his repressed rage, the urge that often possessed him to hurt, badly, those who caused his frustration or earned his hatred due to their stupidity or incompetance. The pool cue was what he often visualized himself using to beat them and it has followed him into this shadowlands for this reason.

Psyche's Unresolved Issues

• Autumn: There are a host of unresolved emotions, both good and bad, and she also represents the legacy which he didn't leave behind. The life he never had a chance to live. They never lived together, never were married, never had children, never grew old together. He needs to realize that the time they did have together was precious to him and that his relationship with her was his greatest accomplishment and a worthwhile legacy. He also has to let her go, to live her life, and make her own decisions, accepting her for who she is.
• Computer: His computer symbolizes, for him, everything he failed to do in life. Going out, meeting people, going places. The trips he never took, the risks he wouldn't take, the chances he let slide by. Every person he couldn't bring himself to talk to, every party he couldn't bring himself to attend, slinking back to his terminal to live his 'pseudo-life'. He has to come to terms with the good effects that his networking had on his life and forgive himself for his shyness.
• Matthew: His brother represents a lot of what he would like to be but was never able to. More responsible, more intelligent, more together, more driven. He also holds a lot of unresolved anger towards him for being better than him and for supporting him when he was fucked up and unemployed. He needs to realize that he isn't in competition with him and learn to recognize his own strengths and forgive himself his mistakes.
• Dennis: He isn't a major unresolved issue in Eric's life, but he is a persistant one. Eric has never forgiven himself for the difficulties and awkwardness of their relationship and wants to make some sort of peace with Dennis. He needs to have just one moment with him where there is comfortable resolution.
